The 2008 BMW X5 oil type and capacity iS5w30 and 8.5 quarts for the 4.8L v8 engine. Having high quality oil is key for the engine to run smoothly. You will run into issues with the oil at some point. The 4.8is almost seems like the best compromise of performance and maintenance - as the 4.8 liter seems to be the quite a bit more common than the 4.6. Perhaps I'm not looking at it the right way, but after the engine failed in my E39 540i I'm a little bit more wary of the v8 reliability. I'd rather get the x5 than a range rover though. Am on BMW #4 and have always changed oil at 24,000km intervals no problems. Have read several times on Bimmerfest that the 4.8l can take up to 9.5 litres but the manual says 8. My most recent shop said they put 7.5 in and it showed it was full so we added another 2 litres after this problem arose, and it's been fine since. If you are a DIY mechanic that is replacing the Cam Position Sensor on a 2009 BMW X5 4.8i. Here is your answer. EGJSK.
