Iwould say play aoe2 if you like the nostalgia, similiar civilizations and the dark age. Play aoe4 if you don't like the dark age of aoe2 (aoe4 basically starts in feudal), like civilizations which are more asynchronous than in aoe2 and like more modern gameplay.
